Q&A with Owner, Mary Kate McKenna
Give a high level overview of your business. What products or services you offer, where you're located, etc.
Mid County Liquors is a Retail Liquor Store located in Black Hawk, CO on the scenic Peak to Peak Highway. We sell an eclectic selection of Wine, Beer and Spirits, along with specialty mixers, garnishes, and snacks.
That being said, we are not just a place where people can buy their celebratory beverages. We are a place where we put customers first by fulfilling special requests and always provide a high level of hospitality for locals and visitors to the area.
What inspired you to step into the world of small business?
I have always had a passion for small businesses! My experience with small business owners and entrepreneurial environments that were fast paced, independent, and impactful on communities inspired me to want to own my own business.
Describe your typical customer and what you love about your customers.
We have two different customers - our loyal locals and our curious visitors. We love all them because they appreciate and support their local store!
What shift in your business led you to seek out new/additional funding?
I pursued additional financing from CEF because I had the opportunity to purchase existing inventory at a time I purchased the business and I knew it would provide a successful business transition. (The store did not close for one day during the transition).
How did you find out about CEF?
My neighbors, who own a small business in the area, had received funding from CEF while a transition they had with their Pet Feed Store and they recommended I reach out.
What was different about working with CEF compared to other lenders?
The prompt and detailed communication I received during the process was extremely helpful from CEF.
What were you able to do with the funding you received from CEF?
We were able to purchase inventory for the store.
What's on the horizon for you and your small business?
We are going to purchase the Commercial Real Estate Property where the liquor store is currently renting.
What do you love about the small business community in Colorado?
Fellow CO small business owners are there to support you, provide advice, or just be there when you need to rant a little or a lot.
