Q&A with Owner, Sergio Rodriguez

Give a high level overview of your business. What products or services you offer, where you're located, etc.
Sol Popsicles and Snacks offers a variety of popsicles and snacks for different events. We are located in Thornton and serve all the front range at various events and festivals. This is our first year in business and we are excited for the many more coming.

What inspired you to step into the world of small business?
Best way to control your income. The harder you work the more income you can generate. I am passionate about my business, and I know that all my effort and hard work is being used to grow something that belongs to me.

How long have you been in your industry and what do you love most about your industry?
With my current business, we are focusing on the ice cream industry. This is our first year in the industry. Our fans are kids and parents who remember the ice cream truck driving around neighborhoods, by the park or attending community events. It brings back memories for adults and kids.

What led your business to seek out new/additional funding
I researched grants for new businesses in Colorado, eventually I found CEF, they could help take advantage of this great opportunity and help us finance the rest as well. CEF allowed us to make our idea into a reality. We spoke, they walked me through the steps necessary to reach our goal.

How did you find out about CEF?

When I began looking for grants in CO, I found CEF. I did research of the company and requested to get more information. After that we began our loan application.

What was your experience like in working with CEF?

Alan and his team really took the time to explain the steps and to help with the whole process from biggening to end. Creating a business plan, a budget and everything needed to succeed. Things that I wouldn't have done in my own but have allowed my business to begin the right way.

What were you able to do with the funding you received from CEF?

Buy my business van and all the equipment needed to begin operating.

What advice would you give to another small business owner going through the loan process?
Work, Study, volunteer in your future industry. Don't just jump in without as much prior experience as possible.

Have you worked with our Business Navigation (coaching) team?
Yes

What difference has working with them made for your business?

The coaching team allowed me to think of my business in a different perspective. Identify areas of that i would need to face. Create a business plan that i can follow.

What is something you're looking forward to in the next 3-6 months in your business?
I am looking forward to continuing to grow and expand into different events across town. Year 1 was about putting our name out for and learning more about our industry, not that we have a year of experience we can turn around and be more effective with future events.
