More and more businesses are not only enthusiastic about the product or service they provide, but also have a deep passion for their community and the environment. Sweet Action Ice Cream is an example of this conscientious, deliberate trend. Sweet Action is an independent homemade ice cream shop located in the heart of Denver. Samantha Kopicko and Chia Basinger are the proud owner-operators. With Samantha’s many years of sales, marketing and management experience and Chia’s years of restaurant experience combined with their love of making ice cream, the next logical step was to open Sweet Action Ice Cream.

Samantha and Chia are committed to creating the best ice cream by using the best ingredients around: farm fresh all natural dairy products, Colorado fruit from their CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and homemade candies for mixing into the ice cream. Sweet Action strives to create the best traditional flavors (vanilla, chocolate, Oreo) while working with unusual ingredients to bring new flavors to the table (baklava, strawberry balsamic, chocolate wasabi, spicy carrot sorbet).   They also offer ice cream cakes, brownies, fresh baked waffle cones and coffee. In addition, they use only biodegradable products, their cups and spoons are made of corn, and their pints and plates are made of sugarcane fiber.

In addition to buying local ingredients and using products friendly to the environment, Sweet Action loves working with nonprofits in their community. Samantha explained, “We work with nonprofits on our ‘Sponsor Flavor’. This is a flavor we run for the month inspired by a nonprofit organization, and then we donate 10% of our total sales of that flavor to the nonprofit.” This month they are working with Girls Rock Denver, and the Sponsor Flavor is “Girls Rockin’ Road.” In the past they have partnered with Net Impact and Project Angel Heart.

Sweet Action came to Colorado Enterprise Fund with a solid business plan, marketing, sales, restaurant experience and the need for additional working capital to purchase the freezers they needed to make ice cream. CEF Loan Officer, Alan Ramirez, had the following to say about Sweet Action, “They were really well organized. Both Sam and Chia came in with good transitional skills that could be applied to the business.  In speaking to them as well as reviewing their business plan, you knew Sweet Action was something they had been considering for a long time.”  Since they opened in 2008, they have grown from two employees to seven.

Stop in soon to enjoy a delectable cold treat on a hot summer day. Sweet Action Ice Cream is located at 52 Broadway, Denver, CO. You can also learn more about them at www.sweetactionicecream.com.
